Untitled #2 [Hatch Tender]
Grosso must have set out to depict every part of the longshore experience. Here he portrays a hatch tender giving hand signals to the winch driver, who is at the controls but cannot see the cargo at the end of the cable in the hold below. A winch comes in all sizes and is a lifting device consisting of a horizontal cylinder turned by a crank on which a cable or rope winds.
