Woody gets an introduction to the well-kept grounds of Shafter, a Farm Security Administration camp near Bakersfield, California. 1941.

Weatherwax drove with her husband, the writer John Weatherwax, and Woody Guthrie to visit the Shafter farm camps in 1941. The camps were near Bakersfield, California, set up to house farmers fleeing the Dust Bowl.

Weatherwax remembers that Guthrie sang all the way down and back, and the Weatherwax's sang too. When they arrived Guthrie went off to sing. Seema set up her camera.
