Ralph Fasanella
Harry’s Luncheonette, 1983
Oil on canvas, 22 x 40 inches
The relative calm of this image in the small town of Ardlsey (about 20 miles north of NYC) is in stark contrast to the densely populated images of urban areas. Historian Paul D’Ambrosio quotes Fasanella talking about arriving at the diner at five in the morning:
I picked up a musician and a mad college teacher and we’d talk about art, culture and politics. The regulars called us the Culture Club. Then I got to know too many people and the conversation got to be demoralizing. Yesterday, yesterday, yesterday—that’s all they talked about. I got a couple of pictures out if it, but it drove me crazy.
