Ralph Fasanella
Daily News Strike, 1993
Oil on canvas, 30 x 40 inches
In 1993, Fasanella completed this encyclopedic painting of the Daily News strike. The composition centers on a newsstand with a sign proclaiming “I don’t sell Daily News.” On the left side of the canvas picketers face off with police outside the Daily News building while cutaway views reveal “scabs” and managers working within. Fasanella devotes most of the right side of the picture to the huge Brooklyn plant, where idle trucks sit outside and more “scabs” run the presses inside.
