Textile workers’ housing Charlotte, North Carolina

 Charles Rivers took this photograph during the violent strike in the textile mills of Gastonia in 1929-1930. Desperately poor textile workers across the Carolinas, black and white,  lived in substandard housing such as that pictured here.
