Catalina Crisotomo, “Holding Grandma”

“That’s my friend, taking care of an old lady,” writes Catalina Crisotomo of her photograph. “I was touched by their relationship. You can really feel the love. It’s not just because of the money that you work.” The image is included in Unseen America: Photos and Stories by Workers (Regan Books, 2006). Ms. Manjares is a domestic worker and a member of Damayan Migrant Workers Association in New York City. The organization promotes the rights and welfare of Filipino migrant workers. “Damayan” is a Filipino word that means helping each other.
