early-1940s

“Young Gene,” an oil painting by ILGWU member Grace Kopman, was published in the Magazine of Art in 1946 to highlight an experimental collaboration between the union and the Metropolitan Museum of Art that resulted in art classes and exhibitions. Kopman was about 57 years old when she made this sweet and striking painting in the early 1940s.

More of this story is told in Cultural Initiatives – The Union Meets the Met, a section of the Labor Arts exhibit The ILGWU: Social Unionism in Action.
