FDNY Recruitment Brochure

This “genderless” FDNY recruitment brochure circa 1998 was part of an aim to attract female applicants to the force, an aim that continues to exist today.  Although advertisements like this one attempted to reach female audiences and highlight the gender neutrality of a job like firefighting, statistics have historically demonstrated otherwise.  In fact, more so than brochures or advertisements, recruitment efforts from fellow female firefighters part of organizations like United Women Firefighters were far more successful.

Check out page 17 of NYC’s Workforce Profile Report for the gender makeup of the FDNY and other governmental agencies in 2013.
