Firefighters March in Pride Parade

Georgia Brooke Guinan, the first transgender FDNY firefighter marches in the Pride Parade in NYC alongside her colleagues.  This photo, taken in 2011, marks the last photo in a series of “firsts” for the FDNY.  See photos of others in the series such as the first Asian-American firefighter to join the FDNY, and the first FDNY class of all Latina Women.  Although these historic additions to the force were significant and worth celebration, they do not diminish the continual need for diversification within the force.

See a statistical breakdown of the gender makeup of different governmental agencies.  The FDNY falls among the forces with the lowest percentage of female employees, with a strikingly off-balance ratio. Rachel- can you please click the link and see if it brings you directly to page 17? If not I’ve got to direct viewers to that page.

Similarly, see a statistical breakdown of the ethnic makeup of governmental agencies wherein the FDNY, again, is among the least diverse organization. Rachel- same as above for page 18 here…

Once they are published, it would be nice to add links to the photos of the other “firsts” mentioned above.
