First Asian-American Woman to join FDNY
The first Asian-American woman firefighter, Sarinya Srisakul, photographed in 2011 as she responds to a fire emergency in NYC. Srisakul joined the FDNY in 2005. Admittance to the FDNY was divided along gender lines for some time. Similarly, involvement was racially divided as well. Diversity is coming, though slowly, to the still overwhelmingly white male force, thanks in significant part to demonstrations, protests, and encouragement from Academy members, activists and all in between.
