Member of Engine 81 Climbs Aerial Ladder
Marianne McCormack climbs an aerial ladder, one that extends upwards from the fire truck in order to allow firefighters access to the tallest parts of buildings. Firefighters often faced extenuating, physically demanding working conditions made easier by teamwork and cooperation among members. For females on the force at the time, the failure of the FDNY to provide properly sized gear added extra challenge to their job.
