Firefighter Candidates Rest During Training

Firefighting candidates Lois Mungay and Lorraine Cziko take a break from training at the FDNY Academy.  Prior to applying to become firefighters in 1982, Mungay had an exercise physiology degree and Cziko was a teacher.  Candidates like these two were required to go through testing that would measure their ability to perform physical tasks they would encounter on the job as firefighters.  The physical portion of the training and test would include drills like dragging a hose or “victim” and breaking barriers of entry.  Read more about female firefighter’s experiences with training and testing in the LaborArts exhibit- Women Firefighters in New York City.
