Painter and illustrator Don Freeman was influenced by the Ashcan School to paint inner city life in New York early in his career. During the 1930s, Freeman was a dramatic illustrator for New York City’s theater district, during which time he made this work, depicting a scene of work behind-the-scenes of the stage.

The image is part of the Labor Arts exhibit Scenes of American Labor with art works that evokes the individual and physical experience of work. The entire series is housed at the Sullivan Goss Gallery in Santa Barbara, CA.
