Reporting to Work by John Davies

Oil on canvas board, 27 x 17

In this Depression-era painting, John Davies (1901-1965) shows men set against the city’s gloomy landscape, heads bowed, as they report to work. It is part of the Labor Arts exhibit Scenes of American Labor, with thirty nine paintings that evoke the individual and physical experience of work. The entire series is housed at the Sullivan Goss Gallery in Santa Barbara, CA, and salutes the American worker from the late 1800’s to today.
