Children join May Day Parade, New York City

Children would often take off from school to accompany their parents on May Day parades during the 1930s. Among the signs carried by this group of marchers is one calling upon viewers to “Patronize Union Restaurants Only” and another asking workers to “Unite to Free Tom Mooney and Warren Billings, Martyrs.” Mooney and Billings were arrested and imprisoned following a bombing of a Preparedness Day parade in San Francisco during World War I in 1916.
