The ILGWU’s 80th Anniversary
This painting was commissioned by the International Ladies’ Garment Workers’ Union (ILGWU) to celebrate its 80th anniversary in 1980. Among the distinguishable features in the painting are the children sewing in the tenement, the women carrying heavy piles of piece work from the tenement to the shop, and the strikers being arrested.
The artist, Letizia Pitigliani (1935 – 2012), was born in Rome and worked extensively in Rome and in New York City. Visit the Letizia Pitigliani website for a comprehensive survey of her work.
