Margaret Novoa, “Young Man’s Haircut”

This photograph is by Margaret Novoa, an insurance coder at Jamaica Hospital Family Practice Center in New York City and a member of 1199 SEIU. It is of her son Derek getting a haircut. “This print of my son Derek makes me happy,” Ms. Novoa wrote, “because I always regretted not having a picture of his first haircut.”

The image comes out of Ms. Novoa’s participation in photography classes offered through Bread and Roses, a nonprofit cultural project of the labor union 1199. It is included in Unseen America: Photos and Stories by Workers (Regan Books, 2006).
