Marva Stennetts, “Man Selling Books”

This photograph of a bookseller on Eastern Parkway in Brooklyn is by Marva Stenetts, a supervisor with SSEU Local 371 AFSCME in the Linden Job Center in New York City. It is included in Unseen America: Photos and Stories by Workers (Regan Books, 2006). The book is the result of work made in classes offered through Bread and Roses, a nonprofit cultural program of the labor union 1199.

Ms. Stennetts wrote: “I’ve seen this man over the years, selling books on Eastern Parkway near the Botanical Garden. I’ve often wondered if that is his only income and how he is surviving.”
