Valentina Paljusaj, “Kneading Bread / Bread in Motion”

“My mother was born in Yugoslavia, as was I,” writes Valentina Paljusaj of her photograph. “Her name is Bosa. She is preparing a dish called pite. Pite is not easy to prepare.  I not only see the food, but also the soft, gentle hands that have always cared for me and my siblings.”

Ms. Paljusaj’s image is included in Unseen America: Photos and Stories by Workers (Regan Books, 2006).  She is a member of Damayan Migrant Workers Association in New York City.
