Nelson Castillo, “Child Writing”

“Moments like these are a dream come true,” wrote photographer Nelson Castillo about this image of a young child writing. It is included in Unseen America: Photos and Stories by Workers, edited by Esther Cohen (Regan Books, 2006). Mr. Castilo is a member of The Workplace Project on Long Island.

The book is the result of work produced by Mr. Castillo and other students in classes given by Bread and Roses, a nonprofit cultural program of the labor union 1199. Students were encouraged to photograph and share stories and images from the world around them.
