Luis Bernal, “Dancing/Who We Are”

This photograph of a couple dancing is by Luis Bernal, a day laborer with the Workplace Project on Long Island. It is included in Unseen America: Photos and Stories by Workers (Regan Books, 2006). The project grew out of photography classes offered through Bread and Roses, a nonprofit cultural program of the labor union 1199. Workers were encouraged to photograph and share stories and images from the world around them.

Mr. Bernal wrote: “This is a picture that would help everyone else know that we come to this country not to do bad things like people say. We come here to work and have fun.”
