Participating unions in May Day parades often carried implements associated with their trade, such as the mallet, paint brush and saw shown here.  Also worth noting are the signs demanding repeal of what John L. Lewis called the Taft-Hartley “Slave Labor” Law, which had been passed in 1947, a year before this parade, and which is still on the books.
