Joyce Carrington, Untitled (woman), The Crisis, September, 1928.
Many of the artists who contributed to The Crisis used Egyptian art for inspiration. Carrington's woman is both modern and African--making her accessible and familiar to readers of the magazine. The setting includes a palm tree and a pyramid. Her hair and makeup echo both a very contemporary 1920s flapper style and an Egyptian Cleopatra. She wears both an African style necklace and also what appears to be a long strand of beads -- typical flapper attire.
