Bernie Robynson, "Progress." The Crisis, July, 1928.
A classically clad trumpeter with a laurel leaf wreath on her head stretches out her arm to hold a long trumpet skyward. A frieze of laborers forms a band across the base of the image, including woodworkers, construction and agricultural workers, a soldier, a writer and a musician. A figure in cap and gown is also included in the productive group. Behind them stand the achievements of black workers: a cathhedral, a skyscraper, a factory, a school and a small church. Robynson empoys a heroic visual vocabulary to personify "progress" in the black community, achieved through education.
