The following cartoons chronicle the early IWW free
speech fights which took place between 1908 and 1912.
The campaigns began when a number of cities passed
laws banning street corner speaking which prevented
Wobbly orators from publicizing the extortionist
practices of local employment agencies and organizing
migrant workers. The IWW led a campaign of civil
disobedience aimed at overwhelming the jails and
making the laws so costly to enforce that local
governments were forced to retract the ordinances.
