Domino Sugar Refinery, Louisiana, late 1930s.

Photograph by Arnold Eagle .

Among the projects established under the Federal WPA (Works Progress Administration), established under the Roosevelt New Deal to provide jobs for the unemployed, were several that gave employment to artists, writers and other cultural figures. It is quite surprising how many distinguished artists and performers got their start working in WPA projects. The photography projects produced many pictures of Americans at work in the various industries. These two were taken by Arnold Eagle in a Louisiana sugar refinery.
