This member of the United Federation of Teachers, bearing his son on his shoulders, is expressing a sentiment commonly felt in the labor movement at the time. President Reagan had just been actively involved in breaking the strike of the air controllers and in destroying their union - after they had supported him in the 1980 elections. The strike opened the gates for employers to use "replacement workers" to help break strikes - a practice that was previously practically unheard of. The sarcastic sign, "Lose One for the Gipper" is a reference to one of Reagan's movie roles as Notre Dame football coach Knute Rockne, whose team slogan was "Win One for the Gipper."
